Police say man fatally shot by King George deputy

Police say a King George deputy fatally shot and killed a man who approached police with a knife.

King George Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Kecia Wharton tells The Free Lance-Star (http://bit.ly/1MMpLOq ) that the shooting occurred late Saturday night at a residence.

Wharton says deputies were responding to a call regarding a disturbance. She says the 65-year-old man barricaded himself in a bedroom when the deputies arrived.

Wharton says officers entered the bedroom after state police and Sheriff's Office personnel tried for about an hour to talk the man into surrendering. She says the man approached the officers with a knife and ignored repeated commands to stop.

The man died at the scene. His name wasn't released. He was described only as a white male.

None of the officers was injured.
