Police: Man killed by officers after opening fire on deputies near accident scene

A man who authorities say fired at officers who were investigating a car accident is dead after he was struck by return fire.

The incident happened around 2 a.m. Monday morning in Stafford County. Police were called to Cool Springs Road near Kings Highway after a vehicle left the roadway.

When deputies arrived they found the vehicle empty but did locate a man walking on the opposite side of the roadway. Officials say that as deputies approached him, the man, who was armed, fired on them.

The deputies returned fire, striking the man, who was then hospitalized. He died a short time later at a nearby hospital.

The man was not identified but said to be a 60-year-old white male. The investigation into the incident is still ongoing at this time.
