Police make arrest in murder of 95-year-old man

Police say they have made an arrest in the murder of a 95-year-old Colesville man.

60 year-old Eric S. Dyson was arrested. Dyson is from the 500 block of Randolph Road - the same area where the murder took place. He faces charges of first degree murder, credit card theft and ID theft.

Officers say the victim was found at around 12:30 p.m. Monday inside his apartment in the 500 block of Randolph Road.

Police identified the victim Tuesday as Dan Long Belvin, a retired Naval officer. We have learned he was also a pilot and flight instructor.

We are told he had trauma to his upper body.

Janice Hutton unfolded the piece of paper that gave residents a bit of information about what investigators describe as a homicide here at the Randolph Village senior housing community.

"You will notice police presence through the building as they conduct an investigation," she read on the notice.

Montgomery County police arrived here at the apartment building at around lunchtime on Monday. A friend had reported not seeing Belvin for a few days. The property manager checked the apartment and found him dead under what police describe as suspicious circumstances.

Residents wonder if they need to be more cautious.

"I'm stating they can go about their business as usual," said Montgomery County Police Cpt. Paul Starks. "Again, keeping their doors and windows locked. If they see anything suspicious, please give us a call. I do want to say that we believe this is a closable case."

"The building is pretty secure," said Yvette Harrison. "You have to be buzzed in or someone there in the front who sees you. There are cameras there."

Residents say Belvin had a small dog that died just a few weeks ago. Otherwise, they say he lived alone.

"He was a good guy," said Hutton. "He didn't bother anybody."

We reached out to Randolph Village and were told they would not be commenting on the case. They say they are just allowing the police to do their jobs.

More information is expected to be released regarding the care and the arrest on Wednesday.
