District Heights mayor dies at 39

District Heights Mayor James Walls was found dead inside of his home on Thursday, authorities said.

Officials told FOX 5 a medical emergency call was made on Thursday morning. The 39-year-old was pronounced dead at his home on Council Drive at around noon.

At this time, police believe preliminarily that there are no signs of foul play. Walls' body was taken to the medical examiner's office for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Walls was the youngest person in the city's history to be elected mayor. He was also the youngest person to serve as vice mayor and city commissioner. He was re-elected to a third term as District Heights' mayor on May 5, 2014.

"Mayor Walls was elected when he was 29 years old, one of the youngest mayors in the entire country," said District Heights Vice Mayor Eddie Martin. "He just had a birthday Saturday. He just turned 39 on Saturday. He was well-liked, well-received. The city liked him ... He will be sorely missed. And he was smart. He knew government. He knew how to run the business of government."
