Clowning around: Police say kids made up Annapolis sightings

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Police say children made up stories about spotting clowns in unusual places around Annapolis.

Annapolis police tweeted Tuesday that the kids admitted to making up their clown sightings. Police had sent out a warning Monday after receiving reports of sightings in different neighborhoods.

Police spokeswoman Cpl. Amy Miguez tells media outlets that four children between 7 and 9 reported seeing clowns on their routes to school, but it couldn't be confirmed by surveillance video.

When police re-interviewed the two oldest students Tuesday, Miguez says they admitted making it up. They likely won't be charged, but Miguez says it's an opportunity to warn others about making false reports. These reports came after children in South Carolina told police that clowns had tried to lure them into the woods.
