Pittsylvania authorities identify drug that sickened 4 teens

DANVILLE, Va. (AP) -- Police have identified a drug that sickened four teenagers in Pittsylvania County.

The Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office says a preliminary lab analysis determined the drug is 25I-NBOMe, along with an antibiotic compound.

Deputy Devin Taylor tells media outlets that the drug is dangerous and can cause severe illness or death.

A 2014 report by the World Health Organization says the drug is clandestinely manufactured and has no recognized therapeutic use. According to the report, the drug has been implicated in 14 deaths in the U.S.

The sheriff's office says the teens, aged 15 to 19, sought emergency treatment in the past week after ingesting capsules containing the drug. No new cases had been reported as of Wednesday.

No arrests have been made.
