Officials announce results of NJ gun buyback initiative

- Top State, Federal, and local law enforcement officials announce the results of what they are calling the most successful gun buyback in New Jersey History.

New Jersey Attorney General Christopher S. Porrino announced that the state's residents turned in 4,775 guns in exchange for cash over the two-day initiative. 

Among the weapons collected in Camden, Trenton, and Newark were 1,973 handguns, 1,142 shotguns, and 1,025 rifles. 129 assault weapons were also turned in. and received the highest payout of $200.00

The initiative set out to combat gun violence.

"Fewer guns on the street means less violent crime and accidental deaths," Acting U.S. Attorney William Fitzpatrick said. "With an impressive total of over 4,700 unwanted guns removed from our communities in Newark, Trenton, and Camden, I have no doubt that the Attorney General's buy-back campaign will save lives.
