PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas (FOX 26) - A grand jury will reconvene in January 2016 after no one was indicted in any felonies related to the hanging death of inmate Sandra Bland. The 28-year-old woman died three days after she said was arrested In July. She was taken into custody after a traffic violation stop.
State trooper Brian Encinia remains on administrative leave for what the Texas Department of Public Safety refers to as violating procedures. The medical examiner determined that Bland died by hanging herself with a garbage bag.
A panel of five special prosecutors presented evidence and information to the grand jury on Monday.
During a news conference on Monday in Chicago, relatives of Bland criticized the grand jury process. Bland's mother and sisters said that they wanted to see all the evidence in the case and that they were frustrated with all the delays. The conference took place four days after a judge set a 2017 date for a wrongful death lawsuit.
