CMPD make arrests in Epicentre parking deck attack

Charlotte-Mecklenburg detectives said they've arrested and charged two suspects involved in the assault in the Epicentre parking deck on Wednesday, September 21.

Antonio Gatewood, 22, was identified as a suspect in two commercial burglaries that occurred at the CVS and Jimmy Johns during the unrest on September 21. That same night, a victim was assaulted in the Epicentre parking deck by several people.

During the assault, the victim sustained serious injuries. CMPD detectives obtained video of the assault and were able to identify Gatewood as one of the suspects in the assault.

Earlier on Tuesday, detectives located and interviewed the victim in the assault. As a result of information and evidence gathered during the investigation, detectives obtained warrants charging Gatewood.

On Tuesday, September 27, warrants were issued for Gatewood for Common Law Robbery, Assault Inflicting Serious Bodily Injury, False Imprisonment and Ethnic Intimidation.

Detectives also identified Cortney Ward Pinkney, 27, as a second suspect in the breaking and entering that occurred at the CVS and the assault that happened in the Epicentre parking deck. Pinkney has ben charged with robbery, assault, ethnic intimidation, false imprisonment, conspiracy, breaking and entering, larceny and injury to property.

According to CMPD, Gatewood and Pinkney were taken into the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office.

The attack occurred at approximately 10:00 p.m. on the E. 4th Street side of the Epicentre parking deck. The video begins with the victim, a white male with light colored pants and short brown hair, on one knee at the entrance of the parking deck.

Approximately 10 men chase the victim in the parking deck. They then proceeded to hit and kick him and then pull off his pants as they continued to assault him.

Detectives are seeking the public's assistance in identifying the following individuals, so that they may be questioned in this case.
