National Mall fireworks go on despite the rain

- All throughout the day on Monday rain fell consistently around the D.C. area. It left residents and visitors unsure if the National Mall fireworks display would go on as planned but, despite the rain the show went on!

A light drizzle was falling when the fireworks began right at 9:09 p.m. on the National Mall.  Low-hanging clouds made most of the fireworks almost impossible to see, and crowds on the Mall were noticeably thinner than in years past. But the National Park Service vowed to continue with the fireworks unless the weather was dangerous.

The Capitol display has not been postponed in 25 years.

In terms of security, everything went off without a hitch but, there was at least one brief incident. Earlier in the evening, police had to clear one area of the Mall after officials got a report about something suspicious in a porta potty.  Someone had spotted what appeared to be a timing device inside one of the toilets. After investigating for almost 20 minutes, officials determined the device to be a pedometer. Park Police when out of the way to say that the person who reported the device absolutely did the right thing.

Unfortunately the rain did delay fireworks in parts of our area. The City of Frederick, Maryland postponed its fireworks display until Saturday, July 24, and Gaithersburg postponed its fireworks show until Friday, July 8. Click here to see a full list of delays.
