Metro's safety operations placed in temporary control of FTA

The Federal Transit Administration house now has been placed in temporary control of Metro's safety operations.

The FTA will make sure the transit agency completes the 78 corrective actions federal regulators asked for back in June, along with 200 other safety issues dating back to 2008.

The Administration's new role will continue only until D.C., Maryland and Virginia work together to help set up a new fully functioning state safety oversight agency board.

"We recognize the urgency of setting the transit system of our nation's capital in much better shape," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx.

"While we will work to direct Metro into a new era of safety, our actions do not remove the need for state and local leaders to govern and prove that they can successfully execute their charge to provide safe, reliable service."
