Metro GM's budget proposal considers jobs cuts, fare increases
WASHINGTON - Metro General Manager Paul Wiedefeld's budget plan, which he outlined at a Metro board meeting on Thursday, proposed continued safety work, job cuts, and the possibility of a decrease in ridership that could accompany fare increases.
The 'Reality Check' budget proposal planned to generate $21 million in funds by raising fares that Wiedefeld said had not been increased since 2014.
The proposal said base fares could increase to, at least, $2.00. Peak and off-peak rides would also see increases.
Metro Board Chairman Jack Evans' proposal that the District would be willing to provide more funds in order to avoid fare increases, service cuts, and layoffs was met with applause, says FOX 5's Matt Ackalnd.
