Md. man arrested for trying to cut down light pole near highway

A Baltimore man was arrested for attempting to steal an aluminum light pole owned by the Maryland Transportation Authority.

Police say 66-year-old Malachi Williams Jr. was seen by a Baltimore police officer at around 12:45 p.m. Saturday using an electric reciprocating saw powered by a generator to cut the pole into smaller sections.

The light pole was located in the area of eastbound Moravia Road at the southbound entrance of Interstate 895.

Police say Williams indicated he was going to use the aluminum for scrap metal to sell.

Williams was charged with theft, malicious destruction of property, possession of a controlled dangerous substance and unlawfully removing a label on a prescription bottle.

According to police, Williams was also in possession of prescription drugs belonging to another person.
