Massive tree falls on Massachusetts Ave. in NW DC

A massive tree fell in northwest D.C. Sunday night, and two SUVs traveling down Massachusetts Avenue slammed into it, unable to stop because of the icy road conditions.

The 4200 block Massachusetts Avenue NW was closed in both directions because of the tree, which fell at the intersection of Macomb Street. It all happened around 6:30 p.m.

FOX 5's Sherri Ly reports both drivers tried to stop by slamming on their brakes, but the roads were too icy and slushy for them to stop. One of the drivers was a man on his way home from work.

The other was a woman who had her husband and kids in the car with them. That family was on their way to the Washington Capitals game at the time. The husband told FOX 5 another car in front of them nearly got hit when the tree fell just behind it. He said he didn't think the driver even knew the tree had come down, and the car just kept going.

Both drivers told Ly they saw the tree as it fell right in front of them, and they only had seconds to hit the brakes. No one was hurt.
