Maryland State Police receive anonymous threat to commercial aviation

The call came just after 6:30 a.m. Monday to the Maryland State Police McHenry Barrack in Garrett County. Maryland State Police immediately notified the FBI and the state's fusion center.

It contributed to quite a day for air travel along the East Coast. The FBI says two fighter jets were scrambled to escort Air France Flight 22 from Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris to New York's John F. Kennedy Airport during the last stretch of its trip after a claim was made of a chemical weapon aboard the aircraft. The flight landed safety and plane was cleared.

There were also threats made against as many as five other planes flying into airports.

One Saudi Arabian Airlines flight from Saudi Arabia and an American Airlines flight from England into Kennedy Airport were also checked out. Two flights into Newark Liberty International Airport, one from London and the other from Madrid, were also affected. A sixth flight, a Delta plane coming in from Paris to Boston also received a threat.

All of these flights were checked out by authorities and cleared.

The threats are believed not have been credible, authorities say.

According to law enforcement sources, there are concerns the threats are a possible plot to disrupt and delay air travel in the Northeast corridor on the last day of this Memorial Day holiday weekend.
