Man rushes to nurse's aid after she was injured in fall while trying to help accident victims

FREDERICK, Md. - TJ McCardle was one of the first people to help a Good Samaritan nurse who was injured when she fell from a bridge into a river while trying to assist victims at an accident scene.

The accident happened early Wednesday morning along Interstate 70 over the Monocacy River near Frederick, Maryland. 47-year-old Angela Weir, a nurse at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, and her husband stopped their vehicle when they came upon the scene to see if she could help aid the victims of the crash. When she leaped over a concrete barrier separating the lanes of traffic, she fell nearly 100 feet into the river below.

McCardle rushed to her aid after learning what happened. "We decided it was best not to move her and not to ask her to stand up. We waited for the paramedics to get there," he said. He told FOX 5's Bob Barnard that Weir described to him what had happened and how she fell. A trooper on the scene helped her from the water.

Weir was airlifted to Shock Trauma in Baltimore. The drivers of the vehicles were also hospitalized.

McCardle said there was debris everywhere at the accident scene and that he saw a small fire burning next to the tractor-trailer.

Weir's condition is unknown at this time. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
