Man dead after alleged underage drinking party in Derwood

DERWOOD, Md. - Authorities are investigating a death at an alleged underage drinking party in Montgomery County.

Police were called to the 5800 block of Winegrove Court in Derwood around 2:30 a.m. Sunday for a report of an unresponsive person in the home's swimming pool.

Emergency crews say 25-year-old Diego Padilla of Gaithersburg was transported to a nearby hospital after being found in the water. He later died from his injuries.

Police say the hosts of the party initially denied them entry inside to investigate reports of underage drinking. Officers say several intoxicated people were observed outside of the house and large quantities of alcoholic beverages were seen on the home's deck.

Officers say they charged ten adults under the age of 21, and one juvenile with possession of alcohol. Authorities are still investigating the party and charges against the hosts are pending.

The circumstances surrounding Padilla's death and issues related to the underage alcohol party remain under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 240-773-5070.
