Woman shot by man in Takoma Park after meeting him through social media app, police say

TAKOMA PARK, Md. - A Takoma Park woman is recovering after police said she was shot by a man she had just met through social media.

The shooting happened Thursday night in the 8300 block of Flower Avenue after a witness said the two began to argue.

"Officers arrived and what they could surmise was through a social media app, these two met up at a residence in Takoma Park," said Takoma Park police spokesperson Catherine Plevy.

According to the witness, she was on her front porch just before 8 p.m. when she heard loud arguing coming from an apartment on the first floor. She then heard a gunshot and a man came running out of a door.

The witness said she saw a pistol in the man's hand, which he then put into his waistband. He proceeded to run behind the apartment building toward Eastridge Avenue.

The witness also said the victim was shot in the right shoulder and she stayed with her until first responders arrived at the scene. The victim told the witness all of the information about the man was on her phone.

The victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.

It is unclear what led up to the meeting between the two or the argument that followed.

Police said detectives will not reveal which social media app was used due to the ongoing investigation.

The suspect is described as a 5-foot-5 to 5-foot-7 black male with medium complexion and a thin build. He has short hair and wears glasses. Police said he was last seen wearing a white tank top, dark blue shorts and was armed with black and silver handgun.
