Incident involving University of Maryland student jogging near campus reported, police say

An incident involving a female University of Maryland student while she was jogging near the campus was reported Tuesday evening, according to officials.

The University of Maryland Police Department said the incident happened at about 6:55 p.m. along the Paint Branch Trail near Pierce Avenue and Rhode Island Avenue.

The student told authorities she was jogging along the trail when she passed a man who was dressed in dark clothing and was wearing a black backpack.

The student said the man advanced toward her, but she was able to deflect his movement, according to officials.

Investigators said the student was able to get away and last saw the man as he was running into a wooded area.

Detectives with the Maryland-National Capital Park Police conducted the investigation and were reviewing cameras in the area. Maryland-National Capital Park Police said what happened on the trail does not appear to be a crime.

Police patrol in the area has been increased as a safety precaution, according to officials.
