WASHINGTON - An 18-year-old man has been arrested after a transgender woman was intentionally hit by a car in Northeast D.C., according to officials.
D.C. police said the victim was intentionally struck in the 400 block of K Street, NE at around 3:18 p.m. on July 5.
Investigators said the suspect, identified as Startwaune Anderson, of Northeast D.C., was driving a dark-colored hatchback vehicle when he collided into the victim. He drove off from the area after hitting the pedestrian.
Arlene Bud with HIPS, a non-profit organization that aims to help female, male, and transgender individuals engaging in sex work in D.C., told FOX 5 the victim was a transgender woman.
Police confirmed its Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Liaison Unit was investigating the crime.
The victim was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, but has since improved, according to Bud.
Anderson has been charged with aggravated assault while armed.
