Dunbar High School student shot on Hanover Place in Northwest DC

Police say a teenage boy was shot in Northwest D.C. Tuesday afternoon.

The shooting took place at around 3:40 p.m. on Hanover Place, about a couple blocks away from Dunbar High School, according to police.

Police say the victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries, and was conscious and breathing at the scene.

The victim is a student at Dunbar High School. Principal Abdullah Zaki sent an email home to parents saying:

Dear Dunbar High School Parents and Families:

It is with regret that I inform you that one of our students was the victim of gun violence shortly after dismissal today, Tuesday, November 21, 2017. Thankfully, the young man is okay. Our thoughts are with this student and family.

Coping with the effects of violence is a difficult experience, and we want to support our community through this difficult time. To assist, Dunbar High School's counselors will be prepared tomorrow to meet with any students or staff who need support in dealing with this news.

Although this incident occurred away from school, please be assured that it is the top priority of our staff. We will continue to monitor the situation and update you as necessary.

On behalf of the entire school community, I send positive thoughts of recovery to the affected student.

There is no lookout information for a suspect at this time.
