Grenade turned in to police, part of Georgia Avenue closes as precaution

Two blocks of Georgia Avenue in Washington were shut down Sunday morning as a precaution after a Brightwood resident turned in a grenade they found.

The grenade was turned in to the Fourth District Police Station, near the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Missouri Avenue Northwest.

The 5900 block and 6000 block of Georgia Avenue and the 900 block and 1000 block of Peabody Street were closed as police attempted to dispose of the explosive

Patrons at a nearby Walmart were instructed to move to the back of the store and no additional customers were allowed inside during the closure.

Mayor Muriel Bowser issued a statement to area residents informing them that police had been in touch with federal partners, who will take possession of the device.
