Armed suspect seriously injured after being shot by officer in Alexandria, police say

Police in Alexandria say they are investigating after a suspect was shot by an officer Sunday afternoon.

Alexandria police say at around 4:20 p.m. officers responded to multiple calls for shots fired in the 1000 block of Vernon Street.

Officials say an officer on the scene investigating encountered the adult male suspect with a gun.

Police say the officer shot and wounded the suspect, who was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries.

The officer was not physically injured during the incident, and no one else was injured from the reported earlier shots.

Alexandria Police say that per their department policy, Virginia State Police will be handling the criminal investigation into the shooting and provide further updates.

The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave.
