FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (FOX 5 DC) - A student at a Virginia high school collapsed and died while playing basketball earlier this week, according to an announcement on the school system's website.
School officials with Fredericksburg City Schools say the incident happened on Monday, March 11 at James Monroe High School. The student was a tenth grade boy and was in the gym at the time of the incident.
"This loss is sure to raise many emotions, concerns, and questions for our entire school, especially our students," said school principal, Taneshia H. Rachal, Ed.D.
Rachal said counselors and a crisis intervention team is on hand to help students, parents and teachers. "We are saddened by the loss to our school community and will make every effort to help you and your child as you need," Rachals statement continued.
The student has not been identified at this time. It is unclear how the student died.
