Strong winds bring temps below zero, take down power lines, poles in Northern Virginia

ALEXANDRIA, Va. - As heavy winds bring bone-chilling temperatures throughout the area, many are left without power as well.

All of Maryland, Northern Virginia and D.C. are under a Wind Chill Advisory until 11 a.m. Monday.

Winds have taken their toll in Northern Virginia, where Dominion Energy reports hundreds were without power Sunday night.

In Fairfax County, Spring Hill Road near Old Dominion Drive in McLean will be closed for several hours while crews try to move a large giant tree that blew down from high winds and brought down power lines.

A large power is seen in bent in the road. Crews are working to move the tree and power lines safely. Dominion Energy says the outage impacted 300 customers in the area.

Those in the neighborhood are asked to use alternate routes driving through the area, and repairs could continue possibly into the morning.

Alexandria Police tweeted on Sunday morning the scene at Duke Street and Holland Lane, where a large street sign came crashing down from strong winds.

Alexandria Police remind drivers to be alert for debris in the road ways.
