Storm causes roof to be blown off DC apartment building; residents displaced

WASHINGTON - Several D.C. residents have been displaced from their apartments after a passing storm caused the roofing to be blown off their building Wednesday night.

The storm damage happened at around 6:45 p.m. at a 12-unit building located in the 400 block of Cedar Street in Northwest D.C.

"My mouth dropped open," said resident Pat Carpenter. "It looked like a war zone. People were coming out of the buildings and we didn't even know what was going on. The firemen were like, 'You can't go in.'"

She said firefighters evacuated the residents so they could assess the damage to the building.

"They told us the roof out back had fallen off and blown over into the neighbor's yard," Carpenter said.

The wind was so strong that the pieces of the roof fell onto areas of the building's property. One piece even flew across the street.

D.C. Fire and EMS said ten residents will need temporary shelter and they are being assisted by the American Red Cross and D.C.'s Office of Community Relations and Services. No injuries were reported.

Fire officials also said in addition to this apartment building, firefighters also found the roof damaged at a nearby apartment building.
