Saint Bernard rescued from icy Virginia lake

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue crews saved a family's beloved dog Friday night after it fell through ice on a lake in the middle of the snowstorm.

The large Saint Bernard had fallen through ice about 30 feet from shore on Woodglen Lake in Fairfax Station around 7 p.m. The owners were apparently tubing down the lake when the dog walked out onto the ice and fell in. His owners immediately called 911 for help.

When the 130-pound dog was pulled from the lake, the temperature outside was 21 degrees with a wind chill of 8 degrees, and there was blowing snow.

The dog is lucky--and he'll be just fine. Medics were able to warm him up and after about 30 minutes, he was able to return home with his family. After he warmed up, Captain Randy Bittinger said the dog appeared healthy and wasn't in distress.
