Smoke alarms helped a family of four escape a fire that badly damaged their home in Montgomery County early Thursday morning.

The fire was reported around 2:45 a.m. in the 1600 block of Brisbane Street in the Forest Glen section of Silver Spring.

Fire officials say two adults and two children made it safely out of the home after being alerted by smoke alarms. Authorities say a cat was killed in the blaze. The family has been displaced by the fire.
