Silver Spring possible hit and run leaves woman dead, Montgomery County police say

Authorities were searching for a potential hit-and-run driver they said may have left a pedestrian in the street to die Thursday evening in Silver Spring.

Montgomery County police said they rushed to the scene in the 10700 block of Columbia Pike after receiving the report of a woman being hit by a car at about 6:40 p.m.

Authorities said the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Columbia Pike at Lockwood Drive was closed as detectives investigated the scene. The closure caused traffic to back up in the area and authorities urged drivers to find alternative routes.

Officials said a white van that struck the victim stopped at the scene, but investigators believed another vehicle may have also struck the woman.

"We started interviewing witnesses and when we have collisions of this nature in the dark we don't want to rule out any options," Capt. Thomas Didone with the Montgomery County Police Department said.

Police did not have a description of the potential vehicle that drove off.

Anyone with information that could aid detectives in their investigation was urged to call the Montgomery County Police Department at (240) 773-8000.
