Police search for cyclist who hit 4-year-old girl on Md. trail

COLUMBIA, Md. - A 4-year-old Maryland girl is recovering after she was struck by a cyclist along a trail last week, and she's wearing a big reminder of what happened. Kayleigh Davidson is now recovering, but she'll be sporting a purple body cast for the next six weeks as a result of the accident-- and now, her mother and police are hoping someone will come forward with information about the person who hit her.

Kayleigh, her mom, Amy, and her brother were walking along Lake Elkhorn Trail in Columbia, Md. on Monday, March 28 when she was hit. It was around 2 p.m., and Amy told FOX 5 her son had run ahead to a bench further down the trail. As she and Kayleigh walked together to meet him, they heard the bell of an approaching cyclist, and each stepped to one side of the trail. That's when Kayleigh was hit.

Witnesses told police the cyclist stopped and asked if the child was alright, but then continued on his way. Officers searched the area but were unable to locate him. Kayleigh's mom says the man was riding a red and white road bike, and he was wearing black and red racing gear with either a white or silver helmet and sunglasses. She remembers he had tanned skin, but is uncertain of his ethnicity.

Kayleigh was taken to the hospital, and is reccovering. Her body cast covers her torso and right leg, as a result of suffering a broken femur in the accident. Amy says it's been a very difficult week for their family, and she has a message for the person who hit her daughter.

"I just wish he had helped me," Davidson said. "It would have saved her minutes of excruciating pain. That's all. I just wish he would have helped."

An anonymous person is offering $1,000 reward for information on the cyclist's identity. Anyone with information is asked to call the Howard County Police Tip Line at (410) 313-STOP (7867).
