Policy change allows bike riders to bring bicycles on Metro trains at any time

Metro riders can begin bringing their bicycles with them on trains at any time.

The policy change takes effect Monday and ends restrictions that prohibited bikes during rush hours.

"We received requests from Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA) and others in the bicycle community asking us to take a fresh look at our policy," said Metro Chief Operating Officer Joe Leader in a statement online. "We believe this change supports ridership growth by Metro and a commuting option for those who want to have a bike with them."

Riders with bikes are asked to use the doors at either end of the railcars and not at the center doors to avoid blocking doors or aisles

Commuters can also bring their bikes along with them on Metrobus. All Metrobuses are equipped with a rack that can carry up to two full-size bikes at a time.

Metro also said it will eliminate Saturday parking fees for Metrorail customers. A $2 fee had been implemented last February as part of a pilot program.
