Officials say on Thursday, a man was assaulted with a hammer inside retail wine store, Cork & Fork, at 14th Street and Church Street in Northwest D.C. just after 4 p.m. Thursday.

According to the police report, the victim and another person were walking on 14th Street when the suspect, who was standing near a trash can, spit on the victim.

Officials say the victim verbally confronted the suspect, who then ran after the victim and the other person. The victim and the other person reportedly ran into the wine store to try to get away from the suspect, but the suspect followed them into the store and hit the victim several times in the head with a metal hammer he was carrying.

The police report states that after the victim kicked and grabbed the suspect, which caused both of them to fall to the floor, the acquaintance of the victim grabbed a bottle of wine and struck the suspect twice in the head with the bottle.

The suspect fled the scene. Police say they are asking for the public's help in identifying the new person of interest, seen wearing a hoodie.

The victim was transported to an area hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Anyone with information that could aid detectives in their investigation is urged to call police at (202) 727-9099.
