Police looking to find suspect who stole victim's keys from pool locker room, burglarized apartment

- Montgomery County police are searching for a man accused of stealing thousands of dollars’ worth of items from an apartment after he took the victim’s keys and wallet from a gym locker.

The victim was at the Kennedy Shriver Aquatic Center in Rockville when it happened. Police said the suspect got the victim’s home address from his license and then went to his apartment on Westlake Drive in the Bethesda area. He was caught on surveillance camera entering the building.

Investigators said just 40 minutes went by between when the victim arrived at the aquatic center and when another family member came home and realized $3,000 worth of jewelry and other items were gone.

“At this point, our detectives don’t have any reason to believe that our victim was targeted for any reason,” said Montgomery County Police Officer Rick Goodale.

He said the burglar may have just been on the hunt in the locker room.

“It could be that is what the suspect was doing – just going through every open locker to see if he could find any property,” Goodale said.

The burglary happened about three weeks ago on July 19, but police only released the surveillance images on Tuesday. Goodale said investigators have been unable to identify the suspect and want the public’s help.

Members of the aquatic center said they often see people leaving belongings unsecured lockers.

“Maybe 50 percent of the time,” said Kang Chen.

Ray Holland told FOX 5 he has also been a victim of theft at the center.

“We came here one day and somebody went downstairs into the locker room and took all the money out of my wallet,” said Holland.

He said he lost $50 from his unlocked locker and now always uses a lock.

“Started locking my stuff down all the time, every time,” he said. “Didn’t want to take any chances.”
