Officer shoots suspect in Prince George's County, police say

An officer shot a suspect inside an apartment in Prince George's County on Monday, according to officials.

The Prince George's County Police Department said officers were serving a search warrant for 26-year-old Correy Janifer in the 5800 block of Cherrywood Lane in Greenbelt when the shooting occurred at about 11:45 a.m. Authorities said the Janifer was wanted for an armed home invasion and shooting in the District that occurred on April 8.

While in the apartment, officers attempted to confront Janifer who locked himself behind a door, according to officials. Police forced their way into the room where Janifer was hiding and an officer, identified as a 19-year veteran of the force, shot Janifer once in the stomach.

Janifer was rushed to the hospital where he was listed in critical condition. No officers were injured during the incident.

According to police, no weapons have been recovered from the scene. The officer who shot Janifer has been placed on administrative duty. The officer, part of a fugitive task force, was not wearing a body camera, authorities stated.

Prince George's County police attempted to take Janifer into custody about a week ago but he fled from officers and escaped capture, according to officials.
