Police: Deadly shooting behind Md. movie theater was marijuana deal gone wrong

Charles County police have identified the victim and the suspect in a deadly shooting that took place Wednesday behind a movie theater. They say 18-year-old Reuel Hicks of Waldorf, Md., was walking behind the movie theater at St. Charles Towne Center around 8 pm when he stopped and spoke with the suspect, who was identified as 19-year-old Devan Quindel Jefferson.

During the conversation, Jefferson suddenly pulled out a handgun and shot Hicks before running away. Hicks was flown to a local hospital, where he died on Thursday morning.

Officers quickly put together a description of Jefferson, and he was located nearby. He was arrested after investigators positively linked him to Hicks' shooting.

Police say it appears Hicks and Jefferson knew each other, and were making a drug transaction when the shooting occurred.

FOX 5's Alexandra Limon reports Hicks was student with two jobs who was also about to become a father. She's told he was also planning to join the military, and that he died in a marijuana deal gone wrong.

Jefferson is charged with first-degree murder, and is currently being held at the Charles County Detention Center.
