Homeowner confronts, shoots man on property in Fairfax County, police say

- A homeowner confronted and shot a man on his property in Fairfax County Monday morning, according to police.

Police said at around 5 a.m., they received a call about an attempted burglary in a subdivision on a golf course in the 6300 block of Fairfax National Way in Centreville.

Police said the homeowner saw a man in his backyard and believed he was trying to break in. The homeowner confronted the suspect near his front porch and shot the man several times.

The suspect was hit in the arm and ended up with non-life threatening injuries.

A neighbor said the suspect went to another house and tried getting help, but they did not feel safe with letting him inside.

Police said the suspect later ended up at a nearby hospital and was airlifted to Reston Hospital where he was treated.

A police source told FOX 5’s Evan Lambert that the homeowner who fired weapon several times at burglary suspect is a retired Drug Enforcement Administration agent. The source also said the suspect is known to police.

Keith Thompson, the neighborhood's Homeowners’ Association president, called the attempted burglary and shooting highly unusual.

“I'm grateful that they have the guy in custody,” said Thompson. I'm glad the individual in the neighborhood where the break-in attempt, robbery attempt occurred – I'm grateful that he was prepared for the situation.”

Police have indentified the suspect as 29-year-old Ethan Redd. He faces charges of unlawful entry and remains hospitalized. It will be up to Office of the Commonwealth Attorney on whether or not charges will be filed against the homeowner in this case. Police said the homeowner will have to articulate why he used force he did.
