CHEVERLY, Md. - A person has died after being struck by an Amtrak train near the Cheverly Metro Station Monday afternoon, Prince George's County fire officials say.
Officials say a trespasser was struck just north of the station terminal near Landover Road and John Hanson Highway. The person was declared deceased on the scene.
A spokesman for Amtrak says Acela Express 2172, which was involved in the incident was headed to Boston from D.C. Service was temporarily suspended. Amtrak says 213 passengers were on the train at the time, but there no reports of injuries.
Maryland MTA says service has been partially restored on the MARC Penn Line between New Carrollton to Penn Station.
Amtrak says Train 178 was reversed back to Union Station and rerouted around the incident.
Amtrak officials say they anticipated residual delays, with service being single-tracked between Union Station and New Carrollton.
Service for MARC Penn Line Train 544 was canceled Monday evening due to the incident.
