Pedestrian killed after being struck by vehicle in Bethesda, Montgomery County police say

A pedestrian has died after being struck by a vehicle in Montgomery County, officials say.

Montgomery County police say 74-year-old Dona Cicy H Amarasekara was hit by a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee on Old Georgetown Road and Kingswood Road in Bethesda at around 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

Amarasekara was transported to the hospital where she passed away from her injuries, according to police.

The driver of the striking vehicle, identified as 45-year-old Sheikh Shehzad Parviz, stayed at the scene following the collision. He was not injured, officials say.

Montgomery County police's Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating the crash.

The northbound lanes of Old Georgetown Road in the area were shut down to traffic after the incident, but have since reopened.
