Pedestrian killed on Inner Loop of Beltway near I-95

A pedestrian was fatally struck on the Inner loop of the Beltway Tuesday afternoon, police say.

The accident happened after 3:30 p.m. on Interstate 495 between New Hampshire Avenue and Interstate 95. According to police, a 2015 International truck tractor struck 66-year-old Mark Armstrong, of Silver Spring, as he was walking in the right lane of the roadway. It is unknown why Armstrong was walking on I-495.

The driver of the truck was identified as 46-year-old Richard Mitchell of Cordova, Tennessee.

Drivers encountered major traffic delays in the area as the two right eastbound lanes were shut down for three hours as police investigated the incident. All lanes have reopened.

Maryland State Police continue to investigate the incident.
