Partial roof collapse at Laurel townhouse

While snow is continuing to melt, the impact of last week's blizzard is still taking its toll. The roof of a townhouse in Laurel gave way under the weight of all the snow on Friday afternoon.

The partial roof collapse happened along South Shore Court. An 8 by 4 foot chunk of roof collapsed above the stairwell. Insulation and debris were piled up outside of the home and it was a complete mess inside as well.

There was one family member home at the time, but he was not hurt.

The repair crew at the home said there was still a large amount of heavy snow sitting on that part of the roof leftover from the blizzard. There was too much weight and the collapse came without warning.

"Refreezing, getting wet again - it shifts as it goes down so you figure if the whole roof is covered and it comes down to a 4-foot section, it's a lot of weight sitting right there," said one worker.

The two-story townhouse has been condemned. While the homeowner is covered by insurance, we are told the family living here did not have renter's insurance, so their damaged items are not covered.

The Red Cross was called out to help them find a new place to stay.

In the meantime, the repair crew is sealing up what they can from inside the home - a temporary solution until daylight when they feel it is safe enough to get on top of the icy roof and begin exterior repairs. The crew said the whole roof will likely need to be replaced.
