WATCH: Officer plunges into icy pond during water rescue (VIDEO)

Police dash cam video shows a Prince George's County police officer plunging into a freezing pond during a water rescue Sunday afternoon. The rescue happened after three men fell into the pond in Glenridge Park, in the Hyattsville area.

"They were frantic. They were screaming. They were exhausted," said Officer Tim Tully. "They said they were in the water for good bit of time."

Tully-- a rookie officer who has spent just 14 days on the job, was with his supervisor-- Officer 1st Class Rion Robinson, when they got the call. The Prince George's County Fire Department was on the way, but the officers felt they couldn't wait to take action.

"At that point, through training and experience, it's a life or death situation and unfortunately, we don't have the time to sit back and wait for the fire department to show up," said Officer Robinson. "So at that time, it was time to go."

"The one guy, you could tell, was fading fast," Tully said.

As Tully tried to reach the men, the ice broke underneath him and he went under.

"Hitting the water and then actually having that cold really takes your breath away," he said.

He said he was in the pond for about five minutes before he was able to get himself out and pull one of the men out as well. Dash cam video shows firefighters arriving with equipment, and they got the other two men to safety

Tully and two of the men were hospitalized for hypothermia. Police say the third man immediately left the scene.

Tully was out of the hospital after a few hours and he'll be back to work as scheduled in a few days. He says family of one of the men came to thank him at the hospital.

"I'm just glad everyone's OK," he said.

"I was proud of him," said Officer Robinson. "He didn't hesitate. He was calm. He never looked nervous and it seemed like he's been out here for a couple years."
