Officer, 8 others injured in crash on Beltway in Prince George's County

A Prince George's County police officer was involved in a crash on the Beltway in Largo Wednesday night.

The accident closed down the southbound lanes of Interstate 95/495 near the Ritchie Marlboro Road exit.

Prince George's County police say the officer was responding to a request for backup by Maryland State Police when the officer's cruiser was clipped by a four-door car, causing the officer to lose control. The officer would hit two other vehicles, a van and a pickup truck, during the incident.

The officer was extricated from the cruiser and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Four adults inside the pickup truck and an adult and three juveniles in the van were also transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No one was injured in the four-door sedan.

The crash caused major delays on the Beltway and drivers were advised to avoid the area.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
