New PGCPS CEO to be announced Tuesday

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (FOX 5 DC) -- Prince George's County Executive Angela Alsobrooks will announce Tuesday who she has selected to be the permanent CEO of the county school district.

Interim CEO Dr. Monica Goldson has been at the helm for nearly a year now after former CEO Dr. Kevin Maxwell quit the position with three years left on his contract.

Sources in the school district tell FOX 5 they will be surprised if Goldson isn't named the permanent CEO.

Alsobrooks' office says the decision comes after a nationwide search. Under state law, a firm was hired by the county to conduct that search, the firm identified multiple candidates who were interviewed by a three-person committee established by Governor Larry Hogan, and then the committee sent three finalists to Alsobrooks.

There has been some criticism that the search only began last month.

John Erzen, Alsobrooks' Deputy Chief of Staff, said the search got off to a late start because the governor's office didn't realize it had to appoint the three-person selection committee.

"Once we let them know what they needed to do, the process started, but then there was a hold up because the law was unclear as to whether or not the state or county had the responsibility to find and hire a search firm to conduct the nationwide search for candidates," Erzen explained in an email Monday.

He said the attorney general's office weighed in, and it took time to get that ruling.

Goldson was named Interim CEO of Schools almost a year ago after Maxwell decided to leave the job-- walking away with about $800,000 in severance. That followed multiple scandals, including a FOX 5 investigation that revealed grade inflation and students graduating without meeting requirements.

Goldson was a deputy superintendent under Maxwell who has worked for the school district for her entire career.

A press conference will be held on Tuesday at 12 p.m. announcing the decision.
