Multi-vehicle crash raises safety concerns at dangerous Northeast DC intersection

WASHINGTON - A crash that involved a total of nine vehicles and resulted in six people being transported to the hospital is raising concerns about the dangers of a Northeast D.C. intersection.

D.C. officials say the crash happened at around 8:11 p.m. Wednesday at Florida Avenue and New York Avenue. It remains unclear what caused the crash, but a witness told FOX 5 that speed appeared to be a factor and an erratic Chevrolet Avalanche rear-ended another vehicle, flipped in the air and landed in the opposite lanes of the roadway.

According to the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), this intersection is the city's sixth-most hazardous based on the frequency of crashes.

In the most recent available data, from 2015, DDOT reported there have been 171 crashes there. The majority were sideswipe crashes while the next most common were rear-end crashes.

When asked if safety changes are warranted at the intersection of New York Avenue and Florida Avenue, a DDOT spokesperson said in a statement to FOX 5, "MPD is investigating the cause of last night's incident and it would be premature to comment at this time. DDOT is committed to safe and efficient travel across the District and will continue to look for ways to make adjustments."
