A Montgomery County man was arrested after police say he assaulted his grandfather before barricading himself in their home for several hours.

Police say officers responded to the family's home in the 13500 block of Montvale Drive in the Colesville area of Silver Spring at around 9:05 a.m. Wednesday for a report of domestic violence. When they arrived, they found a 72-year-old man with lacerations on his face. Meanwhile, the man's grandson, 25-year-old Jalen Marshall, was inside the house armed with a long barrel replica pellet gun and a 3-foot sword.

According to investigators, the victim told them that his grandson had been acting strangely for the last few days. He reported that he was attacked in the morning when his grandson came down to the kitchen and yelled, punched and pushed him to the ground. While on the floor, the victim said he was then struck in the face with a dining chair.

The grandfather was able to get out of the home while Marshall chased after him with the sword, which he had retrieved from his vehicle. The victim ran to his neighbor, who called 911, while Marshall ran back into his family's house and barricaded himself inside, police say.

Officials say Marshall exited and entered the home several times as he carried the replica firearm. He also told officers he was going to drink bleach. After five hours of negotiations with the suspect, officers forced entry into the home and took Marshall into custody.

The victim was taken to the hospital for medical treatment.

Marshall has been charged with first-degree and second-degree assault.
