Man reported missing fatally struck by bus on Capitol Beltway

A 79-year-old man who had been reported missing is now dead after being struck by a DC Circulator bus on the Capital Beltway, according to Maryland State Police.

Investigators say James Albert Gibson, from Upper Marlboro, was struck at 12:30 a.m. while he walking across southbound I-495, north of MD Route 4.

Police say the bus driver immediately stopped the bus on the right shoulder of the road to check on the victim and then contacted police. They say there were no passengers on the bus at the time of the crash.

Maryland State Police says troopers from the Forestville Barrack, troopers from state police's Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division and Crash Team, as well as Prince George's County police and EMS, responded to the crash.

Investigators say Gibson was pronounced dead at the scene by Prince George's County first responders. According to police, Gibson was reported missing shortly before the incident by Prince George's County Police.

The victim has been taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore.

Maryland State Police say the incident remains under investigation.
