MCLEAN, Va. - Protesters gathered outside NOVA Firearms in McLean, Va., on Saturday to rally against the presence of gun stores in school zones.
The rally was organized by The McLean Residents Association for Gun-Store-Free School Zones.
The group was demonstrating support for two proposed bills that would give elected officials like the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors the authority to keep gun stores outside a 1,000-foot safety zone.
Inside that safety zone, around a public or private elementary, secondary or post-secondary school, gun stores would be prohibited by law.
NOVA Firearms is about 100 feet from the grounds of Franklin Sherman Elementary School.
Counter-protesters appeared at the event, citing the Second Amendment in support of NOVA Firearms' location.
Virginia law currently bans the possession of guns in schools and on school grounds. Virginia law also specifically prohibits local government from preventing gun businesses from operating next to schools.
