Police: Man arrested after leading police on chase, ramming 2 patrol cars

- A D.C. man is facing multiple charges after leading Fairfax county officers on an intense chase and ramming into two police cars.

Police say just before 5 p.m. on Saturday, an officer noticed a car driving fast and recklessly near Little River Turnpike and Columbia Road.

Police say the officer attempted to stop the driver, 32-year-old Edward Jerome Butler Jr., but he fled and officers pursued.

Police say Butler then started to drive on Little River Turnpike but was in the lanes going the opposite way.

After a short distance, police say Butler then came back to the right side of the road but continued on with police chasing him.

Police say he then made an abrupt U-turn on Little River Turnpike near Pinecrest Vista Drive and hit a police car, almost head-on.

Investigators say Butler then continued over the center median and started driving westbound in the eastbound lanes of Little River Turnpike.

Because of the immediate danger to other drivers, officers say they attempted to stop the car by using precision immobilization technique (PIT) which caused the car to spin out perpendicular to traffic.

Officers say their technique was successful, but the driver was able to regain control of the car and drove head-on into another police car.

Police say officers moved in quickly by blocking the fleeing vehicle with several other patrol cars.

Butler then got out of his car and ran away, police say, but was stopped by officers and was arrested.

Police say officers from Franconia and Mason assisted the initiating officer in the pursuit and arrest.

None of the officers were injured.

Butler was charged with two counts of misdemeanor hit and run, reckless driving, possession of marijuana, window tint violation, resisting arrest, attempted malicious wounding, assault on a law enforcement officer, felony hit and run, and felony speed to elude.

He is being held at at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center without bond.
