Man arrested and charged for child abuse, police say

A Maryland man was arrested and charged with Second Degree Child Cruelty after he reportedly severely injured a child in DC on Friday.

DC police say 52-year-old Michael Dunn, of Hyattsville, was arrested for allegedly engaging "in conduct which caused a grave risk of bodily injury to the child victim."

The Washington Post reports that according to the police reports, Dunn, an instructional aide at the Whittier Education Campus in Northwest Washington, struck the child, who police say has autism.

The police report says the strike from Dunn caused the child's head to slam into a computer and vomit.

The Post said Dunn pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Saturday. He was released and ordered to stay away from the Whittier Education Campus and all children under 12 associated with the school.

The Post reports Dunn is scheduled to appear in court again Nov. 16 for a status hearing.
