Leaving ice and snow on your car is dangerous and reckless, but not illegal in the DMV

Drivers endured wet and icy conditions throughout the DMV today, with the wintry mix resulting in hundreds of crashes throughout the region.

It also resulted in at least one close call that could have been prevented, when a FOX 5 vehicle was nearly struck by a chunk of ice as flew off of another vehicle.

In fact, while some states - like Pennsylvania - have laws mandating that people clean snow and ice off their vehicles, Maryland, Virginia, and the District are not among them.

Virginia and Maryland have introduced bills that never passed, and while D.C. did pass similar emergency legislation a few years ago, the law was never made permanent.

Nevertheless, experts encourage people to clear off their cars when it's icy or snowy in the DMV.
